Kevin James Red Bank reviews
Not Kevin at his best
Had an ok time at Kevin James' Irregardless show at the Pechanga Theater this week.
After an overly-long YouTube clip of Kevin playing a sound man interjected into a number of well-known movies (it was a cute concept, but about twice as long as it should have been, and the writing was all over the place), the show finally got underway about 35 minutes late. At that point, the crowd was clearly much too restless to tolerate an awful performance by the warm-up act, Kevin's brother, Greg Valentine, who seemed to be making up his act on the fly, and didn't seem at all prepared, or particularly happy to be there. Response from the crowd was tepid at best, and included a "you suck" comment from a drunken heckler - who Greg responded too in a pretty vulgar way (might have been the funniest thing he said), but the exchange further dampened the mood of the audience.
This was the environment Kevin had to deal with - a low energy, disgruntled crowd. He seemed to feel it, too, because it took him a while to get into gear. He had some funny bits in the act, particularly when he acted out apps being deleted from an iPhone and described how awkward he is at social gatherings, but the overall performance was uneven, and not on par with his "Never Don't Give Up" Netflix special.
My family's general consensus is that we probably wouldn't go out of our way to see him again anytime soon, which is disappointing because we were really looking forward to the show.
